Fering & Co.

📜 🏭 Fering & Co. (Vienna)

Fering & Co. was one of several specialised mechanical workshops operating in Vienna during the height of the city’s industrial modernisation. Although not a large factory, the company is documented in:

- Austrian industrial directories (Handels‑Compass / Industrie‑Compass)

-Tra de journals such as Zeitschrift fĂĽr Gas- und Wasserfach

Trade journals such as Zeitschrift fĂĽr Gas- und Wasserfach

- Austrian patent records, where the Leopolder system appears with licensed manufacturers

These sources confirm that Fering & Co. supplied precision measuring instruments — including water meters — to municipal and private clients. Their products followed the Viennese tradition of small‑batch, high‑accuracy mechanical craftsmanship. Water Meter (System Leopolder, c.1890–1920)

Manufacturer: Fering & Co., Vienna, Austria

Model: “Nero Liter 46H”

Mechanism: System Leopolder (Patented)

Material: Cast iron body, glass dial, brass internal mechanism

Provenance: Technical Museum Vienna (Technisches Museum Wien) 🏭 Overview The mechanical water meter pictured, produced by Fering & Co. of Vienna circa 1899-1920, represents a transitional period in European metrology when municipal water systems shifted from unmetered supply to precision volumetric measurement. The meter employs the System Leopolder, a patented Austrian measuring mechanism designed to improve accuracy and reliability in domestic and industrial water consumption monitoring.

The meter’s robust cast‑iron construction and flanged pipe connections reflect the engineering standards of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when water infrastructure expanded rapidly across the Austro‑Hungarian Empire. Its survival and inclusion in the Technisches Museum Wien collection attest to its historical significance and the role of small Viennese workshops in shaping early water‑meter technology.

The System Leopolder mechanism was developed to reduce measurement drift and improve long‑term stability, making it suitable for both domestic and industrial water supply networks.

Austrian Industrial & Trade Directories (Handels-Compass / Industrie-Compass) annual directories listed all registered manufacturers, workshops, and engineering firms in Austria-Hungary. Fering & Co. appears in them.

Austrian Patent Records (Österreichisches Patentamt) The meter is marked “System Leopolder – Patent”, which is a major clue.

The Austrian Patent Office records show patents filed for water‑meter mechanisms under the Leopolder system for Fering & Co. Very little information survives and a deep dive would be required to shed more light on this company's origins and history.
