Ibertconta / Hidroconta

🏭 IBERCONTA — History & Origins

Spain’s first water‑meter manufacturer (founded 1898)

The earliest traceable origin is DELAUNET, founded in San Sebastián, Basque Country, in 1898, described as “primera fábrica de contadores de agua en España” (the first water‑meter factory in Spain).

DELAUNET later became Ibérica de Contadores S.A. — IBERCONTA S.A.

This establishes Iberconta as one of the oldest water‑meter manufacturers in Spain.

Iberconta in the 20th Century grew into a major Spanish producer of:

- Domestic water meters

- Industrial meters

- Meter bodies and castings

- Sub‑metering equipment

By the late 20th century, Iberconta was considered a market leader in Spain’s water‑meter sector, which experienced strong growth in the 1980s.

Iberconta later became part of the Elster Group, a major German metering conglomerate.

The modern entity Elster-Iberconta is described as a Spanish water‑measurement technology company with global operations.

Elster Iberconta with sales across Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia is part of a group with 200+ million meters installed in 115 countries.

In 1993, Iberconta co‑founded Tavira Medición S.A. in Chile, holding 52% of the company.

This confirms Iberconta’s international expansion and manufacturing partnerships. The museum has in its collection a 1990's Iberconta meter.
