LANDIS+GYR

🧭 Origins (1896–1920) — Swiss Precision Engineering

Landis+Gyr began in Zug, Switzerland in 1896 as Electrotechnisches Institut Theiler & Co. (Electric meters, precision instruments).

Landis+Gyr was founded in 1896 as Theiler & Co. in Zug, in the canton of Zug, Switzerland, by technician Richard Theiler and entrepreneur Adelrich Gyr. It began by manufacturing electricity meters that were developed by Theiler. Heinrich Landis joined the business in 1903, acquired it in 1904 and introduced Karl Heinrich Gyr as a partner in 1905, renaming it Landis & Gyr.

Their focus has always been electricity meters, not water meters — but their precision‑instrument engineering laid the foundation for later expansion into multi‑utility metering. Modern Era (2010–Present)The Turning Point — Entry into Water Meters.

In 2011, Landis+Gyr was acquired by Toshiba Corporation of Japan for US$2.3 billion. Landis+Gyr entered the water‑meter business with an ultrasonic model to complement their electricity metering portfolio.

Landis+Gyr is mainly focused on electricity metering, but markets as a global leader in smart grids, AMI, and IoT metering.
