The Leeds Meter Co. Ltd

The Leeds Meter Co. Ltd. (c.1900s–1960s)

British Manufacturer of Water, Gas & Electricity Meters

The Leeds Meter Co. Ltd., based at Tower Works, Armley, Leeds UK, operated as a regional British maker of water, gas, and electricity meters during the early 1900's to 1960's. A surviving c.1932 water‑meter catalogue held in the Falkirk Council Archives confirms the company’s role in supplying meters to municipal authorities across the United Kingdom. Active through the post‑war expansion of public utilities, Leeds Meter Co. produced robust, standardised meters for local councils, contributing to the modernisation of Britain’s water‑supply infrastructure during a period of rapid urban and industrial growth. A 1937 article from Bunbury Western Australian water authority documents that Leeds Co was active in the 1930's. This museum has in its a collection a very rare Leeds manufactured water meter perhaps dating from the 1940's. From surviving scant information it becomes clear Leeds manufactured a large array of water meter types, including smaller size residential meters, Helix turbine meters, Combination meters and Fire hydrant standpipe meters, along with a large range of valves and pipe fittings. Very little information survives on this company and this Museum would be grateful for any new information provided. In 2026 the former heritage listed factory site was converted into a housing estate. This museum has in its collection a perfectly preserved 1" Leeds water meter in its collection dating from the 1940's (pictured above).
