Lorenz GmbH & Co.

The Lorenz water meter company (Lorenz GmbH & Co. KG) is a relatively modern European manufacturer with a clear, well-documented post‑war history.

🏭 Origins and Founding (1963)

Founded: 1963 as an Independent, family-owned company at Schelklingen (near Ulm), Baden‑Württemberg, Germany.

Lorenz was established during the post‑war industrial expansion of West Germany, when demand for reliable water supply infrastructure and metering was rising rapidly. From the beginning, the company focused on manufacturing mechanical water meters for residential and municipal use.

⚙️ Early Development (1960s–1980s)

Initial production centered on mechanical water meters such as:

- single-jet and multi-jet meters

- capsule meters

- bulk (Woltman-type) meters

During these decades, Lorenz built its reputation as a precision engineering manufacturer, supplying utilities and building services across Germany.

📈 Expansion and Industry Position (1990s–2000s)

Developed into a leading German supplier of residential, domestic and large-scale water meters.

Production scaled to over 1 million meters per year

Lorenz retained its manufacturing base in Germany, rather than outsourcing production abroad.

🔄 Shift to Digital and Smart Metering (2000s–present)

From the early 2000s onward, the company transitioned from purely mechanical meters to advanced electronic and ultrasonic meters,

radio and IoT-enabled smart meters.

♻️ Circular Economy Model (c. 2000s–2020s)

A major innovation in Lorenz’s recent history is its sustainability model in recycling and remanufacturing used meters are returned

disassembled and refurbished then reintroduced into production.

Hundreds of thousands of meters annually are recycled.

This positioned Lorenz as a pioneer of circular manufacturing in metering technology.

🌐 Modern Company Profile (2020s)

Employees: roughly 200–350+ staff

Output: 1–2 million meters per year

Markets: across Germany and Europe

The company also collaborates with the ARAD Group (Israel), combining German manufacturing with international metering technology.
