R. Schmidtt

R. Schmitt Water Meter, Germany (c. 1890–1910). A rare early mechanically driven water meter manufactured by R. Schmitt, was acquired by this museum in 2024, which reveals a little‑documented German water meter maker active during the formative period of water metering. The meter features a multi‑dial register, heavy brass construction, and an integrated strainer, reflecting the early challenges of early municipal water systems. The presence of a “Napoli Patent” marking and anchor motif suggests both proprietary design and possible supply to export markets. This type of instrument represents the transition from experimental 19th‑century designs to the standardized meters of the 20th century. The marking “Patent Napoli” (Naples) is very revealing. It suggests: Export or licensing for the Italian market given the dial registers are spelled in Italian. The meter (or patent) was registered in Italy and sold into southern European markets. R. Schmitt was likely part of a cross‑European metering network, not just a local German supplier. The vary rare 3/4" flanged meter is pictured above.
