🧭 Wiener Wasserwerke Werkstatt (Vienna Waterworks Workshop)


Municipal engineering workshops associated with Vienna's public water utility. Established during the era of the First Vienna High Spring Water Pipeline (1873), the workshops manufactured, maintained and repaired the mechanical infrastructure of one of Europe's most important urban water systems. The workshop's activities supported reservoirs, transmission mains, valves, water meters and distribution equipment, contributing to the reliable delivery of Alpine spring water to Vienna for more than 150 years. The organisation remains a landmark in the history of municipal water engineering and public health.


The organisation evolved from Vienna's nineteenth-century efforts to solve recurring public health crises caused by contaminated wells and inadequate urban water supplies. The construction of the city's famous First Vienna High Spring Water Pipeline (I. Wiener Hochquellenleitung) marked the beginning of the modern waterworks era.


Origins (Mid-19th Century)

By the 1850s and 1860s, Vienna's rapidly growing population had outgrown traditional wells and local sources. Water shortages and waterborne disease outbreaks prompted city authorities to seek a permanent solution. Engineers proposed bringing pristine mountain spring water directly to Vienna from the Alpine regions south of the city.


The project was extraordinary for its time:

Construction began in the late 1860s.

The First High Spring Pipeline was officially opened by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1873.

The system transported water over more than 90 km without pumping, relying entirely on gravity.

This achievement established Vienna as a world leader in municipal water engineering.


🏭 The Waterworks Workshops (Werkstätten)

Behind the public-facing pipeline network stood the Wiener Wasserwerke workshops, where skilled craftsmen and engineers manufactured, repaired and maintained the infrastructure required to operate the system. These workshops supported:

- Water meters

- Valves and sluice gates

- Pipe fittings

- Pumping equipment

- Reservoir hardware

= Hydrological monitoring equipment


Growing demand led to the construction of the Second Vienna High Spring Pipeline built between 1900 and 1910.

The Waterworks workshops expanded correspondingly, maintaining increasingly complex infrastructure, including reservoirs, pressure-reduction systems, monitoring stations and urban distribution networks.

The utility survived both World Wars and continued to provide one of Europe's highest-quality urban water supplies.


Historic waterworks sites, including the Water Pipeline Museum at Kaiserbrunn and the Museum HochQuellenWasser in Wildalpen, preserve the engineering legacy of Vienna's water system.


Significance for Water Meter and Utility History

From a water-industry historical perspective, Wiener Wasserwerke is important because:

It represents one of the earliest large-scale gravity-fed municipal water systems still operating largely in its original concept.

Its workshops maintained extensive stocks of nineteenth and twentieth-century utility equipment, including valves, meters and network control devices.

The utility became a model for urban water engineering throughout Central Europe.


The Vienna Waterworks workshop at times assembled water meters for its own use.

This was not uncommon in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when large utilities maintained extensive machine shops.

The original manufacturer's name may have been removed or omitted.

Vienna Waterworks rebuilt, recalibrated, or altered the instrument.

The meter was owned by the Vienna Water Authority and marked accordingly.

Similar practices were used by water departments in Berlin, Prague, Budapest, and other major European cities.


Many water meters were over stamped with the Water Authorities name as they owned them.
