Zenner International GmbH & Co.

🏢 ZENNER – Company History

🔧 Early beginnings (1903–1920s)

Founded in 1903 in Saarbrücken, Germany by Karl Adolf Zenner.

Originally started as a sales company for water meters, at a time when piped water was still not common and accurate billing was just emerging.

Karl Adolf Zenner Snr laid the foundation stone for the present-day company, ZENNER International, in 1903 with the founding of a marketing company for water meters. Running water was still a luxury for many people in those days and most households obtained their drinking water from public wells. In order to guarantee the supply of water over a whole region, fees had to be levied, which, via an individual calculation and billing of consumption, was to form the financial basis for this.

⚙️ Move into manufacturing (1924–1940s)

1924: ZENNER began manufacturing its own water meters (initially in a small workshop).

The products quickly gained a reputation for quality and reliability, helping the company grow.

1938: Moved into a dedicated factory in Saarbrücken.

This period marks the transition from trader → industrial manufacturer.

🏗️ Post‑war innovation & growth (1950s–1970s)

After WWII, material shortages pushed ZENNER to innovate.

The company introduced plastic components in water meters, which was advanced at the time.

Leadership passed to the founder’s son in 1950, continuing the family business.

🌍 International expansion (1980s–1990s)

1980: Third generation (Peter Zenner) took over.

From 1987: Began international expansion, opening subsidiaries in France and Italy, then Eastern Europe after 1990, then Spain, Vietnam, and more. This era transformed ZENNER into a global metering company.

🔄 Major restructuring (2000s)

2005: ZENNER merged with Minol Messtechnik, forming the Minol‑ZENNER Group.

Impact of the merger:

Combined meter manufacturing + billing services

Created a company offering complete metering solutions (devices + data + services)

📡 Digital transformation (2010s)

2012: Expansion into the USA market with production facilities.

Entered gas meter market and broadened product range.

Introduced radio-based remote meter reading (AMR systems).

From 2014 onward: shift to modern wireless communication (e.g., Wireless M‑Bus).

ZENNER evolved from traditional meters to smart metering systems.

🌐 IoT & modern era (2016–present)

From 2016: Focus on Internet of Things (IoT) and digital infrastructure.

Today, ZENNER offers Water, heat, gas, and electricity meters, Smart metering (AMR/AMI systems) and IoT platforms and sensors for utilities and cities.

Operates in 100+ countries with global production sites.
