🏭 🏭 Ukrmetr Water Meter (Kyiv, Ukraine)

Domestic Mechanical Water Meter — Soviet and Post‑Soviet Period

ca. 1960 – 2000

Manufacturer

Ukrmetr Instrument Works (Укрметр / Ukrvodomer)

Location: Kyiv, Ukrainian SSR → Ukraine

Ukrmetr was a state‑affiliated manufacturer of mechanical and electromechanical water‑measuring instruments. It operated under the Soviet GOST metrological standards, later continuing limited production after Ukraine’s independence.

Object Description

A compact domestic water meter featuring:

Brass or polymer body with threaded couplings

Glass‑covered dial marked “Укрметр Київ” or “Укрводомер”

Single‑jet impeller mechanism for cold‑water measurement

Multi‑dial register calibrated in litres and cubic metres

GOST certification stamp and serial number engraved on the casing

Later models incorporated electronic pulse outputs for remote reading.

Markings & Inscriptions

“Укрметр Київ” or “Укрводомер” — manufacturer identification

“ГOCT 2874‑82” or “ГOCT 50193‑92” — Soviet and post‑Soviet standards

Serial number and calibration seal

Flow direction arrow cast into the body

These markings confirm compliance with Soviet metrological regulations.

Historical Context

Ukrmetr emerged during the industrial expansion of the Ukrainian SSR, when regional plants were tasked with producing standardized meters for domestic and municipal networks.

After 1991, the company continued under Ukrainian ownership, supplying local utilities until newer electronic and ultrasonic technologies replaced mechanical designs.

Its lineage connects directly to Axioma Metering (Lithuania) and Metron Toruń (Poland) through shared Soviet‑era design standards.

Technical Significance

This meter illustrates:

The standardization of water‑meter design across the Soviet bloc

The transition from mechanical impeller meters to electronic pulse models

The persistence of GOST calibration systems into the post‑Soviet era

The regional adaptation of European metrological principles within Ukrainian industry
