💧 The Meter Lineage Xylem Acquired (1870–2003)

The true origins of Xylem’s meters begin long before Xylem existed.

✔ 1870 — National Meter Company (New York)

One of the earliest and most important water‑meter manufacturers in the world.

Makers of the Crown, Nash Disc, and early turbine meters.

✔ 1940s — Becomes part of Pittsburgh Equitable → Rockwell

National Meter was absorbed into Pittsburgh Equitable Meter Co. → later Rockwell Manufacturing Meter Division.

Rockwell became a global metering powerhouse.

✔ 1990s — Rockwell Meter Division sold to Invensys

Invensys consolidated:

Rockwell

Meinecke (Germany)

Other European meter makers

into Invensys Metering Systems.

✔ 2003 — Invensys sells the metering division → Sensus

Private equity buys the division and restores the historic name to Sensus Metering Systems.

This is the modern company Xylem eventually acquires.

🏢 Xylem Acquires Sensus (2016)

In August 2016, Xylem purchased Sensus for $1.7 billion.

This acquisition instantly gave Xylem:

- 150+ years of metering heritage

- 80+ million deployed meters

- FlexNet® AMI network

- Smart water, gas, and electric metering

- Global manufacturing footprint

From this moment on, Xylem becomes a major meter manufacturer. The historic details; 🔄 How Invensys Was Formed (1999)

Invensys plc was created in 1999 from the merger of BTR plc (British Tyre & Rubber -founded 1922) and Siebe plc (founded 1818).

Both companies owned industrial and instrumentation businesses, including metering companies.

When they merged, all metering operations were consolidated intothe Invensys Metering Systems. Invensys produced: - residential water meters

- commercial & industrial meters

- turbine meters

- compound meters

- gas meters

- early AMR (automatic meter reading) systems 🔄 How Sensus Metering Systems was formed (2003)

The Invensys name disappears from water meters after 2003.

After the Sale Sensus grows rapidly and becomes a global leader in:

Xylem was created in 2011 when ITT Corporation split into three companies:

- Xylem – water technology

- ITT Exelis – defense

- ITT Corporation – industrial
