Singer American Meter Controls > 1965–1975

Manufacturer: American Meter Company (Philadelphia, PA)

🧩 Overview

In the late 1960s, the Singer Company — best known for sewing machines — expanded aggressively into industrial instrumentation. As part of this diversification, Singer acquired American Meter Company, one of the oldest and most respected U.S. producers of gas and water meters.

During this period, American Meter products were marketed under the name Singer American Meter Controls.

Despite the branding, all engineering and manufacturing remained with American Meter, not Singer’s consumer‑product divisions.

Singer’s corporate strategy in the 1960s–70s was to build a broad industrial portfolio that included:

- aerospace systems

- business machines

- industrial controls

- gas and water metering technologies

American Meter fit this strategy perfectly: a stable, high‑precision manufacturer with strong municipal and utility markets.
