⭐ Origins in Horology (1898–1926)

Founded in 1898 in Nagoya Japan, Aichi Tokei Denki began as a precision clockmaker, producing tower clocks, mechanical clocks, and finely machined gear assemblies.

This early mastery of micro‑gearing, escapements, and precision machining formed the technical foundation that later enabled the company to enter the field of flow measurement.

Early products included tower clocks for public buildings and universities.

The company’s name literally means “Aichi Clock & Instrument Electric Company.”

By the 1920s, Aichi had become one of Japan’s most respected precision‑instrument manufacturers.


⭐ Entry into Water Meter Manufacturing (1927)

Aichi Tokei Denki began producing water meters in 1927, becoming one of Japan’s earliest domestic manufacturers.

Their transition from clocks to meters was natural: both require high‑accuracy gearing, stable materials, and long‑term reliability.


Designs influenced by European meter architecture but adapted for Japanese municipal needs with Wet‑dial and early dry‑dial configurations.


Post‑War Expansion & Material Innovation (1950s–1980s)

During Japan’s rapid post‑war urbanisation, Aichi became a major supplier to municipal water authorities.


Key developments;

- 1950s: Introduction of precision plastics for internal components, reducing wear and improving accuracy

- 1960s–70s: Large‑scale production of mechanical meters for nationwide water‑supply expansion

- 1980s: Development of ultra‑low‑power electromagnetic flow‑meter technology.

- 1992: World’s first battery‑powered electromagnetic water meter

- 2000: Rotating‑indication dry‑dial meters

Aichi’s meters from this era are known for their robust cast‑metal bodies and exceptionally smooth gear trains, reflecting their horological heritage.


Pioneering Electronic & Smart Metering (1990s–Present)

Aichi Tokei Denki became a global innovator in electronic metering technologies.


2010s–2020s:

Ultrasonic water‑meter platforms

IoT‑enabled remote‑reading systems (“Aichi Cloud”)

Lightweight SD‑series meters with reduced environmental footprint

2024: Joint venture in Shenzhen for ultrasonic gas‑meter production


Today, Aichi supplies mechanical, electromagnetic, and ultrasonic meters across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The Museum is yet to acquire a meter.
