Capstan

🧩 Founding & Early Years (1962–1975)

Capstan Meters (India) Ltd. was founded in 1962, incorporated as a public limited company in New Delhi.

From the beginning, the company specialised in mechanical domestic water meters, supplying municipal boards and industrial users across India.

By the late 1960s and early 1970s, Capstan had established itself as a reliable supplier of multi‑jet domestic meters, a design that became the backbone of Indian household metering.

Expansion & Product Diversification (1976–1999)

During the 1980s and 1990s, Capstan expanded manufacturing operations to Jaipur, Rajasthan, where it remains headquartered today.

Key developments in this era included:

- Introduction of Woltman (bulk) water meters for commercial and industrial use

- Development of digital flow meters for process industries

- Supply partnerships with municipal water authorities across India

- Capstan’s Jaipur facility became known for producing robust, low‑maintenance meters suited to India’s variable water quality.

Modernisation & Electronic Metering (2000–2015)

Capstan broadened its portfolio to include:

- Digital flow meters

- Electromagnetic flow meters

- Industrial measuring instruments

Contemporary Era (2016–Present)

Capstan continues to operate as an active public limited company, with directors from the Jaipuria family overseeing operations.

Current product lines include:

- Single jet water meters (15mm) - Multi‑jet domestic water meters (20-25mm)

- Woltman (bulk) water meters (50-450mm)

- Digital flow meters

- Electromagnetic flow meters

- Water pumps and accessories

Capstan is one of India’s oldest continuously operating water‑meter manufacturers (since 1962).

It represents the post‑independence industrialisation of India’s metering sector.

It produces both domestic and industrial meters, bridging municipal and industrial markets. Interestingly Capstan does not have a website and operates hands-length via B2B vendors only.

The HWM.Museum will contact the company to acquire one of its water meters for its collection. TBA
