Saudi Meters Company (SMC) — Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (1981–Present)

Founded in 1981 as the first water‑meter manufacturer in the Gulf region, SMC began as a partnership with Schlumberger to produce mechanical water meters. Now part of Abunayyan Holding, SMC has grown into a major regional producer of mechanical and smart metering systems. 🏭 Initial production: - Dry multi‑jet meters

- Semi‑dry multi‑jet meters

- Wet multi‑jet meters


Expansion and Regional Leadership (1990s–2010)

During this period, SMC:

- Became a major supplier to Saudi municipalities and GCC utilities

- Expanded production capacity for mechanical meters

- Began exporting to other Gulf countries

- Became part of Abunayyan Holding, a major Saudi industrial group in water and power solutions


Transition to Smart Metering (2010–2020)

SMC modernised its product line to align with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and global metering trends.


Key milestones:

2011 — Hydrus smart water meters approved

The Hydrus smart water meter (Diehl Metering technology) was approved by:

Ministry of Environment, Water & Agriculture (MEWA)

National Water Company (NWC)

Over 1,000,000 units installed in Saudi networks.


2017 — Industrial partnership with Diehl Metering (Germany)

Agreement to localise manufacturing of Hydrus smart water meters in Saudi Arabia.

Production capacity: 500,000 smart water meters per year.


2019 — Industrial partnership with Kaifa (China)

Agreement with Shenzhen Kaifa Technology to manufacture smart electricity meters locally.

Production capacity: 1.5 million smart electricity meters per year.


Present Day (2020s)

SMC is now a leading Gulf manufacturer of:

- Mechanical water meters

- Smart water meters (Hydrus)

- Smart electricity meters

- AMR/AMI systems for water and electricity



The HWM.Museum has contacted the company to acquire a locally made water meter for its collection. TBA
