Arad

Origins in a Land of Water Scarcity (1941–1954)

Arad’s story begins in 1941, seven years before the establishment of the State of Israel. In a region defined by chronic water scarcity, precision water measurement was not merely an industrial niche—it was a national survival imperative.

The company’s seed was a small precision‑parts workshop operated by Mr. Rakabi, who specialized in components for high‑accuracy water meters. In 1941, he partnered with the young Kibbutz Daliya, relocating the workshop 35 km southwest of Haifa into a cooperative environment that valued technical craftsmanship and communal resilience.

This early move embedded Arad in a unique socio‑industrial ecosystem: a rural kibbutz with a mandate to innovate for the collective good. The company’s earliest meters were mechanical, robust, and designed for the harsh, arid conditions of Mandatory Palestine.

By 1954, Arad expanded again, forming a strategic partnership with Kibbutz Ramot Menashe, a neighboring community. This merger accelerated production capacity and laid the foundation for the modern Arad Group.

Growth Through Cooperative Industrialism (1950s–1980s)

During Israel’s formative decades, Arad became a cornerstone of the country’s water‑management infrastructure. Several forces shaped its evolution:

- National water planning demanded reliable metering for agriculture, urban supply, and the emerging National Water Carrier.

- Export opportunities grew as developing nations sought durable, low‑maintenance mechanical meters.

- By the 1970s–80s, Arad’s product line included multi‑jet, positive displacement, and industrial meters, many of which became standard in municipalities across the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

Transition to a Global Water‑Tech Leader (1990s–2010s)

As digital technologies reshaped utilities worldwide, Arad shifted from a mechanical‑meter manufacturer to a smart water‑measurement solutions provider. This transformation included:

- Development of AMR/AMI systems (drive‑by, walk‑by, and fixed‑network reading).

- Integration of communication protocols, including cellular and RF systems.

- Expansion into data analytics, enabling utilities to detect leaks, optimize pressure, and reduce non‑revenue water.

Arad Measurement Technologies, headquartered in Yokneam, became the group’s R&D engine, employing over 100 engineers across hardware, firmware, hydraulics, and cloud software.

By this period, Arad products were sold in over 50 countries, and the company held numerous patents in metering, flow measurement, and IoT integration.

Arad at 80: Heritage and Innovation (2021)

In 2021, Arad celebrated its 80th anniversary, highlighting its unusual continuity: a global industrial group still headquartered in a UN‑recognized biosphere reserve shared by Kibbutz Daliya and Kibbutz Ramot Menashe.

Present‑Day Arad Group

Today, Arad Ltd. is a publicly traded company (TLV:ARD) with global subsidiaries across Israel, Europe, North America, Latin America, and Asia. Its portfolio includes:

- Ultrasonic meters (e.g., Octave series) for bulk and district metering.

- Residential and commercial mechanical meters with magnetic transmission.

- IoT‑enabled smart meters with cloud‑based management platforms.

- Advanced analytics for leak detection, consumption profiling, and utility optimization.

Arad’s strategic focus is on smart water networks, integrating sensors, communication, and data science to help utilities manage water sustainably. The Museum has three Arad water meters in its collection (pictured above).
