Compagnie des Compteurs

Founded in 1872, Compagnie des Compteurs became one of France’s most important manufacturers of water, gas, and electricity meters. From its early workshops in Paris to its vast factories in Montrouge and Besançon, CdC combined precision engineering with industrial scale. Their meters were installed across Europe, North Africa, and the French colonial world, and many remain in collections today. CdC began as a partnership between Chamon and Nicolas, who established a workshop at 53 rue Rodier in Paris to produce gas meters. Their early success led to rapid expansion and the formal creation of Compagnie des Compteurs in 1881. The company’s board included leaders from major gas distribution firms, giving CdC a powerful position in the growing utilities sector. CdC meters were known for their durability, precision, and distinctive markings, including embossed “Compagnie des Compteurs – Paris” plates and stamped serial numbers. Their meters featured High‑quality brass castings, accurate measuring chambers, magnetic transmission systems and robust cast iron bodies for industrial models. These design principles influenced European metering standards for decades. Compagnie des Compteurs stands as a cornerstone of metering history. Its innovations shaped the way water, gas, and electricity were measured, billed and managed across the world. Today, CdC meters are prized by collectors, historians, and museums for their engineering significance and their role in the evolution of modern utilities. CdC’s water meters — from domestic brass volumetric models to large Woltmann turbine meters — reflect the evolution of metering technology over more than a century. Their legacy continues through Schlumberger, Actaris, and ultimately Itron, making CdC a foundational ancestor of modern metering systems. The H.W.M.Museum has in its collection a rare surviving 1919 CdC Paris water meter DN15 rotary piston water meter.
