Bulgarmeter

🧭 Bulgarmeter (БВЗ — Bulgarian Water‑Meter Works) National Water‑Meter Manufacturer — Sofia, Bulgaria

Active: 1950s–1990s • State Industrial Complex

šŸ Origins and Founding (1950s)

Bulgarmeter (formally Š‘ŃŠŠ»Š³Š°Ń€ŃŠŗŠø воГомерен завоГ, abbreviated БВЗ) was Bulgaria’s state‑owned water‑meter factory, responsible for producing nearly all domestic and industrial meters used in the country during the socialist era. After WWII, Bulgaria’s Ministry of Industry launched a program to nationalize and centralize metering production.

The Bulgarian Water‑Meter Works (Š‘ŃŠŠ»Š³Š°Ń€ŃŠŗŠøā€ÆŠ’Š¾Š“Š¾Š¼ŠµŃ€ŠµŠ½ā€ÆŠ—Š°Š²Š¾Š“) was established in Sofia around 1953–1955, under the supervision of the State Committee for Machine‑Building.

Its purpose was to replace imported German and Soviet meters with domestic production.

Supply all Bulgarian municipalities with standardized water‑meter models.

Export to COMECON partners under socialist trade agreements.

The factory occupied a large site in north‑eastern Sofia, near the railway line to Plovdiv, with foundry, machining, assembly, and calibration halls.

It served as the Bulgarian equivalent of:

MOM (Hungary), Tehnofavorit (Romania), Hydrometer / VEB (East Germany)

Its meters were widely exported across the Balkans, COMECON countries, and Middle Eastern markets. Expansion and Standardization (1960s–1970s)

During the 1960s, Bulgarmeter became part of the Bulgarian Industrial Association for Precision Mechanics.

It introduced single‑jet brass domestic meters (DN 15–DN 20) and multi‑jet meters (DN 25) modeled on East‑German Hydrometer and Hungarian MOM designs. By the late 1970s, Bulgarmeter employed over 600 workers, producing 150 000–200 000 meters annually. Decline and Privatization (1990s)

After 1989, Bulgaria’s transition to a market economy led to:

Collapse of COMECON export contracts.

Influx of Western meters (Sensus, Itron, Zenner).

Gradual privatization of Bulgarmeter’s assets.

By 1995, production had fallen below 20 000 units per year.

The factory was divided into smaller machining and casting firms; the Bulgarmeter name disappeared from new meters by the early 2000s.
