Guest & Chrimes

Guest & Chrimes was a major British manufacturer of water meters, valves, hydrants, and plumbing brassware, operating out of Rotherham, England for more than 150 years and supplying water authorities across the UK and Commonwealth. The company became Guest & Chrimes in 1847. Products manufactured included: Water Meters, Hydrants, Stopcocks, Valves, Water fittings and Plumbing brassware. A large brass and iron foundry built in 1857, is still standing (though derelict) and will be redeveloped to hotel/apartments in 2026 retaining elements of the building. 1843 - Company established by Chrimes Brothers. Later became Chrimes, Neatby and Co. 1845- Peter Chrimes, Edward Chrimes, and Richard Chrimes, of Rotherham, Yorkshire, plumbers invented the modern high‑pressure screw‑down tap, which helped launch the firm’s success. 1847 - Taken over (it is thought) by Guest and Chrimes 1856 - Manufactured water meters to William Siemens's patented design. 1857 - Richard Chrimes, of Brass Works, Rotherham, was elected to membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, proposed by C. W. Siemens and seconded by W. Fairbairn; he remained a member until 1889. 1859 - Meeting of the I.C.E., 29 March: 'After the meeting, Mr. Siemens (Assoc. Inst. C. E.) exhibited a machine of his invention, manufactured by Messrs. Guest and Chrimes, for joining lead and other pipes, by pressure only. 1871 - Richard Chrimes employed 400 hands. 1914 - Foundry and General Brass Works. Specialities: Chrimes' Siemens and Adamson's Water Meter, 1961 - Hydraulic engineers, producing sluice valves, water meters, penstocks and brasswork required in waterworks construction. 500 employees. 1999 - Acquired by Stanton plc, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Saint-Gobain UK Ltd 2002 - Name changed to Stanton Ltd and in 2008 appointment of liquidators to Stanton Ltd. The H.W.M.Museum has in its collection a rare 1915 water pressure gauge (below) and is searching for a water meter to add to its collection.
