Honeywell Water Meters

Honeywell’s presence in the water‑measurement industry is rooted primarily in its acquisition of Elster, a global leader in metering technologies with a legacy of more than 130 years. Honeywell itself historically focused on industrial control, automation, aerospace, and building technologies, but its modern entry into water metering came by absorbing Elster’s extensive expertise and product line. Timeline; 1870s–1900s - Elster develops early mechanical metering systems 2015 - Honeywell acquires Elster AMCO, entering water metering at scale. 2016–2024 - Honeywell integrates IoT, digital analytics, AMI/AMR, and utility‑management software into Elster hardware lineup. 2025 - Major UK smart‑meter deployment announced with Wessex Water. Honeywell continues global expansion, offering advanced digital metering, leak detection, and smart‑utility platforms. Honeywell formally entered the water‑measurement industry when it acquired Elster AMCO in July 2015.

Elster AMCO, known for high‑performance flow meters, became part of Honeywell’s “Smart Energy” division.

This acquisition instantly placed Honeywell among the major global suppliers of smart metering technology, integrating Elster’s water, gas, and energy metering portfolios with Honeywell’s industrial automation capabilities. Among the most widely recognized meters in the Honeywell Elster lineup:

The V200 / V210 meters combine Elster’s proven volumetric metering with integrated electronics for smart metering functionality.

They feature absolute readings, radio communication, data logging, and leak/backflow alarms.

Honeywell continued developing Elster’s electromagnetic technology, exemplified by the evoQ4 line—designed for accuracy, low maintenance, and harsh environments.

Honeywell today offers one of the world’s broadest ranges of metering systems:

- Volumetric, single‑jet, multi‑jet meters

- Electromagnetic and ultrasonic meters

- Sub‑metering systems

- IoT‑enabled digital meters

- Utility data analytics platforms 📜 Comprehensive Timeline of Honeywell’s Corporate History

1885 - Albert Butz invents the “furnace regulator and alarm,” an early automatic temperature‑control device.

He forms the Butz Thermo‑Electric Regulator Co. in Minneapolis USA. 1906 - Mark Honeywell establishes the Honeywell Heating Specialty Co., specializing in hot‑water heat generators. 1927 - Honeywell Heating Specialty Co. merges with the Minneapolis Heat Regulator Company (the successor to Butz’s original firm). 1969 - Honeywell plays a major role in the Apollo 11 moon mission, contributing more than 16,000 parts across critical stabilization and control systems. 1999: AlliedSignal acquires Honeywell but chooses to keep the Honeywell name due to its strong global recognition. 2015 - Honeywell acquires Elster AMCO, entering water metering at scale. Currently the Museum does not carry any Honeywell Meters in its collection.
