Dobbie Dico

The Dobbie name can trace its history in the rich fabric of Australian foundries back to 1862, when Alexander Dobbie, a Scottish immigrant, completed his apprenticeship as a brass moulder and commenced his own foundry business in Gawler Place, Adelaide. Originally involved in the production of religious iconography for local churches (brass crosses, candlesticks, vases, offertory, etc.), the foundry was very successful and by 1885 was known as A.W. Dobbie & Co. In 1890, the foundry initiated the production of water meters for South Australia’s Hydraulic Engineers Department (which eventually morphed into SA Water), commencing a manufacturing tradition that would run for over 100 years. Many of these meters remain in service throughout rural South Australia, still functioning today, a testimony to the design's longevity. In 1895 Dobbie expands interstate and opens a branch in Hay Street Perth WA. The business manufactures brass foundry wares, general engineering services and also sells a diverse range of high value imported industrial and domestic goods. In 1904 Dobbie builds a new showroom at 804-808 Hay Street Perth CBD. By this time branches had opened in Fremantle, Bunbury and Kalgoorlie. Mr Dobbie passes in 1912 and is succeeded by his son Alexander Herbet Dobbie. In 1935 A.H.Dobbie formally established the fully independent Dobbie Dico Meter Co. Ltd., consolidating its position as the leading manufacturer of water meters into the South Australian market. The company operated from 126-128 Sturt Street Adelaide S.A., where from this site it is known to have manufactured 20 & 25mm PD meters, a 40mm inferential meter, Helix-turbine meters in 2, 3, 4 & 6 inches, as well as meters for Hydrant Standpipes and possibly more. At some point in the 1970's the water metering division became a member of the Davies Shephard Group.

The Dobbie Dico Meter Co. (DDMC) was originally established in Western Australia in 1940. A joint venture between Mr. William (Bill) Bardon and Mr Alex Dobbie (Alexander’s grandson). A.W. Dobbie & Co. Ltd., had the office branch at Hay Street, Perth and manufactured a wide range of machinery with their main line of business now sewing machines. Together Bill and Alex identified an opportunity in the W.A. market to locally produce water meters and with the South Australian expertise to draw upon, agreed to commence manufacturing operations in Perth. The name of the company was derived from the Dobbie connection and Dico, Latin for ‘to state or declare’. It was felt this was a strong name for a manufacturer of meters. The original Dobbie Dico plant was located in Wittenoom Street, East Perth and comprised both a ferrous and non-ferrous foundry, together with engineering shops and product assembly facilities. During WW2, DDMC was contracted to supply deck equipment and other casting components for the US Navy's operations and installations within Australia. This business area faded as WW2 ended. DDMC, as the company was initially known, commenced the manufacture of water meters and valves for the WA market and at one time accounted for some 70% of all water meter production within the State. Dobbie meters were noted for their accuracy and reliability and remained in production for many years. In 1952 DDMC (Perth) acquired the neighboring iron foundry business Kay & Heron, the operation is thus expanded to meet demand. In 1961 the company enters the Fire Protection Equipment market and commences manufacture of various equipment. 1970 sees the company expand into process control valve equipment manufacture for civil and industrial customers. In the late 1980's Manu Electronics P/L (ManuFlo) began an association with DDMC purchasing their 20mm Co-Polymer water meters via Davies-Shephard and modifying them to electronic signal output types with 1000 pulses per litre, the flowmeter was known as the MED20.

By the early 1990's changes in government procurement policy and the availability of mass-produced overseas water meters with cheap plastic internals, influence DDMC to change business direction and focus on civil water transfer and infrastructure thus the manufacturing operation moves to larger premises at 430 Victoria Rd Malaga WA in 1998. The business finally ceases manufacture of water meters in 2001 after 60 years of meter manufacture in WA. As far as is known Dobbie Dico manufactured water meters in sizes 3/4", 1", 1-1/4" and 1-1/2" sizes of rotary piston type principle. They are also known to have manufactured Standpipes with some form of measurement device fitted. Today Dobbie is a diversified multifaceted business operating in a number of areas, including civil and defense products. The H.W.M.Museum has rare examples of Dobbie meters. Many thanks to S.A.Water who in Jan-2026 donated rare surviving examples of Dobbie water meters and datasheets. (Research compliments of Dobbie Co. and Alex Manu - 2025)
