Wasser‑Geräte

Wasser‑Geräte GmbH is a long‑established German manufacturer of mechanical and electronic water meters, founded in 1947 and headquartered in Spaichingen, Baden‑Württemberg Germany. The company is recognised internationally for its high‑precision engineering, durable mechanical meters, and its transition into modern electronic and smart‑metering systems.

The company employs around 200 people and operates both its German headquarters and a production/testing facility in China.

Origins and Post‑War Foundations (1947–1960s)

Wasser‑Geräte was founded in the immediate post‑war reconstruction period, when German municipalities were rebuilding water‑supply infrastructure. From the beginning, the company specialised in mechanical cold‑water meters, manufactured to German precision‑machining standards.

A key early innovation was the Petrei‑Zähler, a mechanical precision meter named after its inventor. This design became the company’s foundational product and was refined continuously over the decades, earning a reputation for durability and accuracy.

By the 1960s, Wasser‑Geräte had established itself as a reliable supplier to German utilities and was beginning to expand into neighbouring European markets.

Expansion and Product Evolution (1970s–2000s)

During the late 20th century, Wasser‑Geräte broadened its product range and strengthened its engineering capabilities with: - Single‑jet and multi‑jet mechanical meters

- Hot‑water meters for district heating and apartment blocks

- Pulse‑output meters for building‑management systems

Electronic, Wireless & Smart Metering (2000s–Present)

Today, Wasser‑Geräte is positioned as a state‑of‑the‑art producer of both mechanical and electronic water meters. Its modern portfolio includes:

- Electronic water meters with integrated wireless M‑Bus (wM‑Bus)

- OMS‑compatible smart meters

- Combined cold‑/hot‑water electronic meters

The Petrei‑Zähler meter remains a historically significant product, representing the company’s mechanical engineering heritage.

A continuous manufacturing lineage from 1947 to the present, makes the company one of the longest‑running independent meter makers in Europe.

This positions Wasser‑Geräte as a valuable case study in the global development of water‑meter technology. The HWM.Museum has in its collection a 1" Multijet vertical mount water meter.
