Origins and Founding (1930) The Founder: Dr. Nansen Araújo established the company on August 22, 1930, in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais Brazil. The company was initially named Fábrica Nacional de Instrumentos Científicos Nansen. The Water Meter Era (1937–1970s) In 1937, Dr. Nansen saw a growing national need for urban utility infrastructure and expanded production into water meters (medidores de água). Before Nansen, Brazil relied almost entirely on imported European or American meters. Nansen became one of the first domestic companies to mass-produce mechanical utility meters for Brazilian municipal water networks. Their historical water meters were rugged, mechanical devices usually made with heavy brass or cast-iron housings to withstand severe underground humidity and tropical climate conditions. Transition to Electricity and Smart TechNew Direction: In 1970, Nansen pivoted into the electrical sector and began manufacturing electromechanical electricity meters - Tecnologia eletromecânica. Phasing Out Water Meters: Over time, electricity measurement became the core pillars of their business. The company gradually stepped away from water meters to focus on electronic power grids. Modern Era: In 2018, Nansen was acquired by the Chinese company Sanxing Electric.
